Eventually, the varnish wears off in spots (it can tend to peel as opposed to just rub off) and it can leave a spotty uneven finish. That is especially true on rings. I'm a newcomer to this craft, but would like to try this tutorial, thank you. Regarding your comment about wanting to retain the patina, is there any reason why you couldn't simply varnish the ring, for example using polyurethane varnish? I imagine it would seal it and prevent any further oxidation. Just a thought.
