DIY: Interchangeable Stretch Bracelets with Infinity Clasp

And switch

This is a work in progress.  Not at all my original intent.  One of those, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade type of things.  But I think it has a lot of promise.

It all starts with this free tutorial on how to make your own hook and eye clasps.  Naturally, I'd like to show you how to make fancier clasps, so I made this S clasp.

Since you don't know the size of my rock, I'll tell you that it's an infinitely large infinity clasp.  Slight exagerration, but just under two inches long.  But I really like it.  So it has sat next to me for a week while I considered my options.

A multi-strand anything will look nice in it - and I think it's one of those clasps that begs to be seen instead of hidden in the back.  So, what to do?!

Stretch the limits

At the same time I'm pondering my options, I'm working on a tutorial for how to make stretch bracelets. And then the two projects collide.

I'm not sure I've ever seen an interchangeable stretch bracelet before - which could either mean no one has thought of it, or no one wants it. Or that I just haven't seen it.

But it's looking pretty cool to me.

I used stretch magic and lapis flat ovals to make two strands, each about 5 inches long, with jump rings on the end.  That allows me to slide the beaded strands on and off the clasp - which also serves as the bracelet focal.  Or not - I can always rotate it to the bottom side of my wrist.

And I don't use the clasp to put it on - it's stretch-y.  So, I just pull it into place.  The jump rings are only used to change out the strands.

And here it is!  An interchangeable stretch bracelet with an infinitely large clasp!

I'll try to publish the tutorial for the S clasp tomorrow.  You can decide how large you'd like to make it.

What do you think - is the world ready for interchangeable stretch bracelets?  Have you seen them before?

  1. Oh I love this! I have to say this "not sure I've seen ever seen an interchangeable stretch bracelet before - which could either mean no one has thought of it, or no one wants it. Or that I just haven't seen it." gave me a giggle!

  2. Yaaaah... me, too. But then there's always the "build it and they will come" factor. I just saw a combo part stretch and part chain/wire/leather bracelet, the trick being to figure out just how much stretchy length is required to get it on.

    1. I like the idea of a little stretch and a little something else. I'm definitely going to explore it some more.

  4. Make a second clasp and you have interchangeable choker possibilities.

  6. Looks nice. But how do you attach jump rings without cutting through the elastic

    1. The elastic is threaded through the closed jump ring and then knotted around it. Ideally, you would use jump rings that are soldered closed (called closed jump rings) and then there would be no potential sharp edges if the jump ring edges started to separate.

  7. What brand, color, and size of elastic did you use? And where did you hide the knot?
    Thanks, Lori

  9. I made several different stretchy bracelets with lobster clasps on both ends to replace the chain on my medic alert bracelet.

  10. I think this is a beautiful design. As for interchangeable that is a great idea but I am not sure people would really take the effort.

  11. I really like the design but I am not so sure people would be take the time to make the change but it is worth the try. This is my second time in an attempt to make a comment so I hope it works.
