Well, not really, but I do look forward to a day to appreciate all that my Mom has done for me. And a reason to slack off and skip the laundry and cooking.
But what I also like is the opportunity to make some pretty gifts for my friends who are such terrific Moms. And that's what I did most of this week.
This is an example of one of the Mothers pendants I made. They have sections for each of their children's birthstones. I like to think they are a little more special than the store bought versions.
One thing I can tell you, is you have to be a little creative in finding gemstones. The real birthstone gems can be pretty expensive. For example, this necklace is for a friend who's children are born in April and May - which means diamonds and emeralds. Yikes!
Hopefully, it looks like diamonds and emeralds, but it is really natural zirconia and dyed green onyx. Much less expensive as you can see. The Mothers Birthstone Pendant tutorial is available at the beadwork site. If you are familiar with wire wrapping and a little hammering, it goes together very quickly.
I think these pendants look especially good with a variety of stones. For example, this one is for a friend of mine with four children. I also added her birthstones to the back of the necklace near the clasp. Poor Dad! He was totally left out of this design (as if he had nothing to do with it!)
Here is another version. I like the style, but the gemstones don't stand out as much as I would have liked.
Of course, this one is mine. Oh well. It is aquamarine and opals. It was a cloudy day when I took the photo, so it does look better in natural light, but I still may re-do it.

Because the opals are so soft, I had to be very careful wrapping them on the bar. I also couldn't wrap around the sides of the stones like I did on the pendant bars with the harder gemstones. See the difference above.
Well, I hope these ideas help you find something great to make for your Mom, your friends who are Moms or treat yourself!
Happy Mother's Day!
